Stigma and Mental Health

Sorry it's late girls... Homework for Thursday 13th October.

What problems might be associated with being given a diagnosis of a mental health disorder such as schizophrenia? I am looking for a brief summary with 4-5 possible issues being addressed, on paper if needed but preferably on this blog.

I can't recommend the link below highly enough for personal accounts of psychosis: MENTAL HEALTH TALK ONLINE

You may also want to check out again Rosenhan's 1973 being sane in insane places experiment.

  1. I would have thought the stigma involved would be the main issue, as it's not a very nice thing to have and there have been lots of issues with it in the past. Also, Im not sure if there might be something that someone can't do if they're diagnosed with it, for example a particular job. Also, I know the medication has some nasty side effects. I can;t imagine it's very nice for the person being diagnosed with it either as they may feel they're being branded as 'insane'.

  2. You have identified a few issues her Caitlin. We could also look at the particular issues the Rosenhan study showed up (the treatment once identified as "abnormal."

Why is it "not very nice?" Are you referring to possible discrimination - in which case, how might this manifest itself (you have referred to employment).

    :-)
